June 14, 2020 (Awdinle Online) – Sources close to the talks between Somalia and Somaliland in Djibouti have confirmed that the discussion hit a brick wall after President Musa Bihi refused to discuss “unity with Somalia” as an agenda item and insisted on discussing “outstanding issues between the two sides”. In his opening remarks, President Bihi said that Somaliland is not interested in rejoining Somalia.
On his part, president Farmaajo said he came to Djibouti to “make major concessions for the sake of unity of Somalia”.
Sources say Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed of Ethiopia and US Ambassador Donald Yamamoto were dismayed to learn that Somaliland President was not ready to discuss compromise.
The leaders are currently drafting a face-saving communique which will declare the resumption of the talks a great success. The communique will highlight that technical teams will continue the discussion.
